In 1 Sam 3:1-10 we see Samuel hearing God’s voice for the first time. How would you like to hear God’s voice? Is it possible? Absolutely!
How often have you had a need and wished you had an answer. Have you caught yourself thinking, “I’m just not sure”. Have you ever not prayed, because you didn’t think you would get the answer that you need to hear ‘right now’?
We don’t need to beat ourselves up over these things. We just need to realise one thing - we are human. Glenda Watson once said, “We are created to hear God’s voice, but as we grow up it is “taught out”, and we learn to process things with our mind.
I love the fact that I can come to God and ask for an answer. Do I get it first time every time? No. But the more I go to God in prayer, the more I communicate with Him, the more confident I become in identifying which is His voice, and which isn’t. Here are some brief points for why
people struggle to hear God’s voice.
  1. They don’t allow God to speak.
  2. They don’t expect Him to speak.
  3. They don’t know what to listen for.
  4. There is no relationship with God
If you would like to be able to hear God’s voice (more than just when there is a problem) consider this.
  1. Ask God to speak - He wants to.
  2. Expect Him to speak.- Have a pad and pen ready to write down what you hear, then have a leader check it out.
  3. Be quiet so that He can speak.
  4. Start digesting the Word of God more.
Sometimes instead of God speaking, an answer may come in the form of a Bible verse, or a word of encouragement from someone, or even a gesture Don’t limit God and try to put Him in a box - He’s bigger than the box anyway.
We see that as time progressed, Samuel learned to identify God’s voice. This happened all through the Bible, and it can happen for you too. Start today. You will be amazed what God will do through you as you simply listen.
